Week 8 Create an Inviting Home

Prompt:  Textile Descriptions:  Visit a store or showroom for a local supplier of residential and commercial textiles.  If this is not possible, use the Internet or print resources for suppliers of home textiles to research and list descriptions of the fiber content, cost, and care requirements for fabrics suitable for each of the following:

1.  Upholstery
Fiber Content: Swede, leather, vinyl etc.. The fabric needs to be durable, abrasion resistance, and be able to take a lot of abuse.

Price: The price of upholstery fabrics can vary a lot of the fabrics chosen and the size of furniture.

Care Requirements: frequent and thorough vacuuming, blot stains immediately (do not rub), use cleaners made for upholstery(test on hidden stop first)
2.  Window Treatment
Fiber Content: The best fibers to use for window treatments are Acrylic and Polyester. These fibers have a high resistance to ultra violet degradations.

Price: Also varies depending on fiber content, style, size, and manufacturer.

Care Requirements: Can be dusted and taken down for normal laundering depending on fabric type.

3.  Bedroom linens
Fiber Content: Cotton or a Cotton/Polyester Blend.

Price: Also varies depending on fiber content, style, size, and manufacturer.

Care Requirements: Launder as needed

Prompt: Analyze Characteristics:  Imagine you and your college roommate want a new area rug for your dormitory room.  Your budget is limited and you want to buy a rug that will be durable, affordable, resilient, and soil resistant.  To accomplish these goals, analyze the following characteristics:  construction method--weaving, tufting, or needle-punching; type of pile and density; and fiber content and finish.  Write a summary indicating your choice of characteristics and reasons supporting your choice.  Include a picture of the rug that meets your criteria.

Woven rugs are more durable, nylon has outstanding abrasion resistance and is the most popular carpet fiber, piece dying will help the carpet stay presentable for longer, high density is more resilient, and we would have a loop pile.

C.  Vignette of fabrics:  Create a vignette of fabrics you would choose for a bedroom design for a future home or apartment.  Label each fabric, identifying its fiber content, finishes, care method, and proposed use.  Include pictures of samples or actual samples.

Curtains: 100% Cotton, Flame Resistant, Wash cold, tumble dry (do not bleach)

Sheets: 100% Cotton, Wash separately or with like colors, dry on low heat

BedSpread: Cotton/Poly Blend, wash cold with like colors, line dry.

Glider Fabric: Suede, Spot clean only
