A good website to visit is: http://www.seconduse.com Include a picture and description of design in your portfolio.
I found this mirror on the Second Use website and loved it. I decided to design a little girls room around this mirror. I designed the room below around the mirror (the black mirror is standing in place of the mirror above)
Prompt: You are about to design your dream home. Find a photograph or make a drawing showing the topography of the site where your home will be located and indicate the direction of the sun's rays as well as the climate of the area.
- Sketch size and layout of the home and where the home will be located on the land
- Draw a floor plan of the home
- Draw an elevation showing the front of the home
- Create a chart that shows what materials you would use to construct the walls and the roof; what kind of insulation you would use, and what features the door and windows would have. Explain why you would make each choice.
Pacific Beach California, elevation: 66 feet
Siding: Manufactured Fiber cement siding
- Resists moisture and mildew development
- I would use this because the house is close to the ocean and this is an important feature to include with so much humidity.
Roofing: Clay shingles
- I would use clay shingles because the weather and location of the house allows me to. It is warm in Pacific Beach California and there is little snow fall. These shingles last the lifetime of the house and don't have to be replaced.
Windows: Jalousie Windows
- I chose this type of window to best use the wind coming off of the ocean. These windows allow for ventilation and would let the wind in to cool off the house.
Doors: French Doors
- I would use french doors are the front and back doors simply for aesthetics.
Insulation: Foam, board insulation
- Attic: R-60
- Ceiling: R:38
- Walls R-15
- Floor: R-25
- I chose all of these numbers and the type of insulation based on the top values in the chart. I assumed that since this is a dream home and I can spend whatever I want I better be energy efficient!
